Jon + Pajamas

No he's not wearing pajamas, he's holding their dog named Pajamas - which might sound a little odd I know, until you get to meet their other dog named Slippers! ;) Yesterday Brent and I got to meet and photograph Jon Hiscock and Janna Burford from Owl Farm Studios. They were such wonderful and genuine people, not to mention such talented artists! The true jewel of working on projects like the one we're doing for The Great Waterway is, the cool and interesting people I get to meet. So lucky! :)

The Sandbanks beaches of The Great Waterway are just so amazing! Clean white sand, lovely grassy dunes, no crowds, crisp blue water......and super nice families keen to help us with photos today! :)

Weekend Free Download - War Museum

I shot these images for this Weekend's Free Download yesterday at the War Museum - I just love the graphic starkness and unsettling tilts to the architecture. I'm also a big fan of all the raw concrete and there's loads of it there, both inside and outside!

Bright Lights - Super Nice Folks!

They say that new experiences are good for you (who ever 'they' are), especially experiences that take you out of your comfort zone or even make you nervous. This morning I definitely got to do just that - I was asked to chat on the CTV Morning Live show here in Ottawa about theXposedProject. As nervous as I was, Kurt Stoodley and the gang made the experience so easy and comfortable! The concept of giving photography away for free is pretty simple as I keep telling people, but it's been so cool how well it's been received. Generosity and sharing might seem a bit cliché in this fast paced commercial world we live in, but it's just so nice to be giving something away for free. So nice!

Street Surface Sunday

I love photo studies, street and surface studies - the photography doesn't need to tell as much of a story as it does for commercial or corporate photography and there is no agenda or schedule. Photo studies are also nice because they can be a series of one or as many as you'd like. Today was super nice because it'd been raining, leaving lovely puddles of water and the pavement slightly wet. The big thing for me when having the opportunity to take my time with my head and camera pointed downward, is having respect for the typically overlooked and doing my best to capture the beauty. :)

Better than I thought

theXposed Project has been more fun and more successful than I had initially imagined. Folks have been following and retweeting the project via Twitter, and it's been so cool that people who have found the free prints have even been even tweeting their find - so cool! I've even had photographers via Instagram, as far away as Alberta, Ireland and Germany tell me that they're going to create similar projects in their cities. As a photographer I love to share imagery, especially my personal work - but to do it in a random off beat way that makes people smile, makes me smile! :)

There's something timeless, abstract and so photogenic about rain on a window, especially a car window! :)

AS FAR AS THE EYE CAN SEE

I had a fun and unique experience yesterday shooting the big finale of the Glengarry Highland Games for The Great Waterway. It was a sea of pipers and drummers - tartan for as far as the eye could see, and I got to be right in the thick of it! (which allowed me to make a few friends) Now it's not a musical style for everyone - it was cool though to hear so many pipers and drummers playing the same music.......quite epic actually!

LinkedIn Means Business

It's funny, I find myself telling my clients and friends about the power of defining your personal brand on LinkedIn - and I find myself sounding a little pushy and preachy. But I guess it's because I feel so strongly about it, not just because of the strength of it's high Google ranking but also its ability to help people build, elevate and share their personal brand (And apparently it's even considerably better for lead generation than Twitter or Facebook). No I'm not a brand specialist or a professional marketer - I'm a photographer, and I'm passionate about helping you present the best possible image for your profile!

So here's the pitch or perhaps the strong suggestion - if you have a LinkedIn profile, Google will do it's job helping your clients or network easily find it - but you need to make sure you're presenting your image the best you can. How you present yourself with your written profile is critical, but so is your LinkedIn profile portrait - its kind of how you show up electronically to a client meeting. It should be professional and it should share personality, and I can help you do that! Whether you're an executive, a creative, a consultant, a student, or anyone who does business with others - you need a professional profile photo for LinkedIn and your other social media platforms!

Event Coverage

Covering corporate events for our Ottawa clients is a much appreciated extension of our corporate photography business. Sometimes that means covering an annual general meeting, a cocktail party celebrating an important milestone, boardroom or offsite meetings or even students for our university clients meeting on or off campus.

We take event coverage very seriously and never refer to it as 'grip and grin'. Respectfully covering events for our corporate clients helps them to tell their story - which helps them move their companies and organizations forward. Sometimes these stories are told in annual reports, press releases, blogs or internal publications and websites.

5 Tips - When Building Your LinkedIn Profile Page

1. Always use a closely cropped professional portrait for your profile page! Never use a photo that was shot at a cocktail party, a wedding or on holiday with your family. LinkedIn is for business so keep your photograph professional and positive!

2. Create a professional headline highlighting yourself. Try to highlight at least three specialties using your own personal keywords. This should be 'who you are', not just your job title!

3. Use keyword rich content when building your summary and experience categories for your profile page. The list of keywords should include words that describe you, your talents and the qualities that you aspire to.

4. Use external links to your website or blog and major social media properties, like twitter and facebook (if it's a professional facebook page). LinkedIn can help you share your personal brand and your story, but it can also drive traffic to your website.

5. Seek and give recommendations. Don't rush into this, it's best to ask your long standing and trusted connections. And again these recommendations should always include some of the keyword phrases you've developed for your describing content.
