Brent goes to school!

Both Brent and I went to school today! We had fun helping the girls at Elmwood School with their 2 day experimental education program - working with them on an entrepreneurial project (a poster campaign for a fictitious fitness event campaign, partnering with the Ottawa Senators). I'm totally sure we learned more than the students! :)

City of Landmarks

We're shooting downtown for the folks at the Federation of Canadian Municipalities and while waiting for folks to arrive I find myself looking out the window at the panoramic view of landmarks - I'm reminded what a beautiful city we live in. :)

Working Weekend

It's great how working on the weekend doesn't feel like work when you get to do cool projects with the folks from BSL, photographing portraits of musicians for the National Arts Centre Orchestra. Today we got to photograph Julie Fauteux and her french horn - such a lovely person and super great to photograph! :)

Window Out Reflecting In

I've always loved it when you're looking in or out of a window and you see a second image or perspective reflecting in the glass. Perhaps it's much like life - as we look out to the world, we're always still somewhat focused within. Is true compassion or vision achieved when we let go of the inner self-focused view? (or it's just possible that I'm posting way too late and I'm being far too philosophical!) ~ : )

It's So Here - Winter!

It's so here and the roads are so horrible - but damn it's pretty!

Pull

Another example from yesterday, of how time and the elements paint with such a beautiful brush on metal.

Surface Beauty

We spent a little time at this cool metal shop today picking up some steel to mount on a few studio walls, and on our way out I spotting the coolest abstract oxidized and painted wall surface. I love that to some, it might look like an eyesore - but to me, I thought it looked so beautiful! :)

Viva La Coffee Break

It was a pretty calm and fun day of coffee drinking and photo talk with Brent and another assistant friend in town from Toronto - Vera Schmalzriedt. It's nice to have this week to gradually slide back into the throws of commercial projects, with conversations about organizing the studio, creative approaches and I guess life in general. It's been super nice. :)

winterwalk

I was sitting in a downtown Starbucks at the end of the afternoon today, waiting for my friend Bar from the NAC to drop by for an after work coffee - and I was taken by just how quickly the weather changes here in Canada. It seems like it was just the other day (a week before Christmas) when it was still hovering above zero and feeling almost fall-like; people were smiling and not thinking too much about winter. And now today folks are bundled up, heads down - walking with determination to make their way home where it's warm and cozy. Yes, today was without a doubt winter......brrrrr!

New Year of Thanks!

It's been quite a ride this past year, with such super clients and awesome projects! From the National Arts Centre, to Scouts Canada, to Carleton University, to the Bank of Canada, to the Great Waterway Tourism District. From hanging out of a helicopter, to wearing a hard hat and work boots, to being wedged into the front of a kayak, to being perched on top of loads of ladders. From photographing musicians, to physicians, to students, to pilots, to the Premier of Ontario, to a roadside fast food beauty and a sleeping songstress in the studio. I guess what I'm trying to say is, THANKS for such a rewarding and fun year! I of course couldn't of done any of this as easily or as well, without the invaluable help of Brent, Lindsay and Matt, Ottawa's best assistants. Thank you so much! :)

A sampling of some of this past year's images is posted on my main homepage.

Network

As I was focusing my camera on the small and close, Alex was widening his view and captured this very cool network of leafless branches and intersecting wire. He has such an eye and a discerning perspective! :)

Resilience

I was just out for a photo walk with my son Alex - we have the best chats when we do that. We were just walking around the neighborhood and down some alleys, shooting some decay and textures, and what ever else caught our eye. I ended up being drawn to some elements of nature that were still resiliently hanging on, despite the ice and snow of winter. I'm always impressed and perhaps a bit humbled by the resilience in nature and maybe even more so in people. There's a quiet heroic beauty in people that despite their own personal challenge, they face their adversity with their head up and eyes forward. It's very humbling and so inspiring.
