Clear Skies - Reining Power

Growing up in Edmonton I grew up seeing the Alberta Legislative Buildings all the time. It was fun and a little challenging last evening to try and shooting some images of the iconic government architecture in a new light.

Running Ottawa

Alex and I were having a little dinner tonight down in Little Italy, and we found ourselves surrounded by the Ottawa Race Weekend. I'm not sure what I found more photogenic, the blurring runners or all of the discarded water cups littering the street - maybe both!

A Class Above

I've been shooting imagery for Elmwood School for years now - classroom, events and portraits. And over the years there's always been a consistent element present. Yes, the majority of the girls come from families with fortunate economic means, but it's not that, it's more about a sense of inclusiveness and humility - if that makes sense. The girls you meet are confident, yet humble and also progressively minded - so it's a great client to shoot for and super kids to photograph. :)

Sunday Morning Coffee

Is it interesting or is it an obsession? Is it necessary? I believe so - to all three. If you ask any committed photographer, whether they're commercial and corporate, photo-journalist, fine art or just a passionate photographer. If you asked them if they shoot everyday, my money is on them saying "absolutely!" and "of course!". It's not really a choice, it's just what we do - who we are. You can't and shouldn't turn it off.

Do I really need to take a snap of my Sunday morning coffee? Of course not, but it was there to be captured, I couldn't resist. Maybe it is an obsession! :)

Byward Market - Bike Night

I grabbed a meal in the Byward Market tonight and as always during the summer, I'm reminded how much the Market loves bikes. Mostly Harleys and Sport Bikes - and tonight, a cool little Italian Aprilia scooter (mine)!

It's an impressive line up of bikes and a fairly intimidating group of folks that hang out who own the bikes. But what I found out tonight after chatting to a few of them, they're just cool guys who love bikes - even mine. :)

Promise

The tulips are out in full force down at Dows Lake - not my normal thing to shoot, but as someone very close to me reminded me of tonight........they're vibrant examples of promise. A massive small world - full of promise, full of beauty and full of life.

Alberta Charm

Alberta has many charms (western culture, polite drivers, the Rockies, down-to-earth folks), but what could be more 'charming' than roadside Beef Jerky sales? ;) What the heck does 'Fresh' Beef Jerky really mean!?

Café Mene

Last night I was lucky enough to have a great coffee with my long time and awesome friend Kathy Mene. She has the coolest Elektra Espresso machine, but it was the conversation that was so cool - everything from life, health, technology, art, writing, New York, friends, shopping, architecture, cars, to moms and cats. Thanks Kathy for the visit!

Artistic Foundry of Refinement

Edmonton has always been a lesser known artistic fine art community, but the new Art Gallery of Alberta and it's magnificent building designed by Randall Stout from Los Angeles has definitely shown Canada otherwise.

I was downtown in Edmonton this morning shooting some Brownstock imagery and I just couldn't resist the endless possibilities of this courageously dynamic building. It's such a cool mix of industrial and organic, creating a treasure trove of highlights, shadows and graphic shapes.

Abstract Rain

I could use a little sunshine just like everyone else, but I do love the rain and what it can do with our perspective. Abstract raindrop blurs through the car window. So random and so cool. :)

Objects in Mirror........are closer than you think.

It's been awesome in between Spring showers and shooting, to get the scooter out on the road. Super fun, and the over $1.30 gas prices haven't been a bad motivator at all either. The scooter is great because it gets you out into the air and environement - you get to see, feel and breathe in where you are.

Spring is Here!

I set out yesterday in pursuit of Spring, and as illusive as it was I found it! Fresh buds and new leaves doing their best to emerge out of dormant branches and grass so green as it grows for the first time this season. It's such an amazing time of year - a time of rebirth and the emergence of newness. It's such an optimistic time of year, a reminder that despite the inevitable decay of autumn and the hard and cold blanket of winter, there is indeed new life and fresh opportunities with the onset of Spring. :)

One Month Late - But Never too Late

I've been out chasing images of spring for my homepage, and I found this lovely field of wild daffodils. I thought I could shoot a nice image for my blog to help focus on the month of May, for what I thought was Cancer month. But apparently April was the Daffodil Cancer Campaign month.

The thing is, Cancer isn't choosy - it doesn't choose a specific month. So any month is a great month to lend some support to the folks helping folks with Cancer. There's so many great organizations doing great work and funding research, like the folks at The Breast Cancer Society of Canada.
