Tintype........the Polaroid of the Past.

My Mom recently return to Alberta from a family reunion out here in Ontario, with some old photos in hand - including these two Tintypes from the 1800's. She scanned them, then emailed them out here so I could have my hand at retouching them. Easy enough.

One of the cool things I discovered while doing a little research on the Tintype (also known as a Ferrotype), is that they were the first instant photos. From the time of preparing the iron plate (not tin), to capturing an image then delivering it to the subject, it was only a matter of minutes.

I don't want to retouch them too much as the process itself was pretty raw to begin with. I just love the ragged edges and random vignetting - pretty cool!
