Eye Spy Polly

A nice blog posting and image to finish the weekend with and start a busy week with. An image my son Alex took today of our infamous studio cat Polly. I love the creative eye of a ten year old - an eye that I know I enjoy watching and learn from. He's not afraid of trying things with the camera. Some things work and some don't, but most importantly he's having fun with it. And today...... Polly was too. ;)

Thanks for following my blog...... have a super week!

This Weekend's Free Download - Futuristically Retro

This Weekend's Free Download was shot in one of the many Metro stations in Montreal. I just love how industrial the environment is, and how the scale of the architecture is so large, daunting and futuristically-retro. It almost looks like a scene from an early 80's Ridley Scott or Terry Gillium film about the future.

Please use this 'link to download' the file. Feel free to print it and frame, just please don't use it for any commercial applications.

*and yeah I know futuristically likely isn't a real word, but it sounds good. ;)

The Good Life

Friday afternoon - a lazy afternoon for a cat. When she's not busy chasing crumpled pieces of paper, surfing facebook or filling her belly with the likes of Friskies or Meow Mix, Polly lounges. She definitely has the good life.

Transitional Decay

I went for a short walk this morning, itchy to get out of the studio and do a little shooting. It's such a monochromatic time of year. Leaves have died and fallen, the pavement is wet, the clouds cover the sun and sky. At quick glance, it's not a very beautiful time of year. But a closer look reveals many gems. And although it's a transitional time of year with leaves and other vegetation decaying, it's necessary and still so beautiful.

This Weekend's Free Download - earth, water, air and fire

This Weekend's Free Download was photographed in Chapel Royal's cemetery at the historic Stirling Castle, Scotland. Stirling Castle is probably Scotland's most important castle, dating back to 1100AD. It's rich history includes bloody turning point battles, and Scottish Kings and Queens being crowned and/or dying there.

It was such an interesting cemetery to walk through - it was like walking back through history. I just loved all of the grave markers, many decorated with the Celtic Cross. The Celtic Cross is such a powerful and photogenic symbol - a religious symbol dating back longer than Christianity. It's also debated that the four extended arms of the cross symbolize a more natural perspective of earth, water, air and fire with the centered circle symbolizing the sun.

Please use this 'link to Download' the files. Feel free to print it and frame, just please don't use it for any commercial applications.

Enjoy.

Real Life - Real Stock

I've been so busy this year shooting assignment work that I haven't made enough time to shoot stock and to promote our small boutique stock site, Brownstock. With Brownstock we've tried really hard to create/capture imagery that is 'real' and not too commercial, giving the imagery more visual credibility. The majority of the imagery has been shot by a handful of Canadian photographers, but our list of shooters includes folks from the US and the UK as well.

Over the next few months I'll be shooting more stock and you'll be hearing loads about what Brownstock has to offer. Any suggestions or ideas regarding content would be very appreciated!

Dark - Heavy - Comfort

Almost everyone I know hates the rain and heavy cloud cover (almost), but I love how it makes a day feel. There's somehow a comfort in the desolation of the light and heaviness of the clouds. And for some reason I just find trees more photogenic without their leaves (they're more reaching and more graphic). When the trees lose their leaves it just seems right that the light is also dark and heavy. And yesterday was just such a day.

I liked it. :)

Free Weekend Download

This Weekend's Free Download is a photograph I took with my son Alex this summer while on a NYC photo adventure. I love how abandoned a park can be in the middle of the day in one of the worlds busiest cities.

Please feel free to download it - print it - frame it, just don't use it commercially. If you like the image - tell your friends, photography should be shared.

Remembrance Day

I'm not one to know a lot about war or conflict. Or to really understand the political reasons why our country is involved in a war right now. But I do appreciate that a great many men and women are away from their families to help people in other parts of the world.

I've done a little work for National Defense this past year, and I met some wonderful folks while doing that - some of which who are over in Afghanistan now (others that are supporting those efforts). Today is a day to help all of us appreciate those folks and all of the men and women over the years that have given service and in some cases their lives for others.

My hat is off to them and to their families.

Kitchissippi Look-Out

Sometimes the most beautiful is the most overlooked. What is beauty anyway. In the eye of the beholder? Perhaps. Aesthetically perfect? Sometimes, but not always. It means different things to different people. To me, it's what's below the surface - the subtle yet powerful impact. The power to move one's emotions, to enhance one's perception of themselves. Beauty, love, the generosity of it all. Some of us go a lifetime to truly discover it, and for some, it's been there their whole life.

Alberta Sunrise

I'm out west again, and it's always great to be home in Alberta (home of the big sky)! This morning I was up super early heading up to the Cold Lake airbase to do some shooting for Defense Construction Canada. The best part of having to get up before the sun comes up, is getting to see it sneak over the horizon. And this morning, it was so beautiful.

I couldn't resist to stop the car and get out to take it in. And yeah I know photos of sunsets and sunrises are pretty cliché. But I thought the reflection on the top of my rental was so cool, I thought I'd take a few snaps.

Available on Brownstock.
